Summer Work for ME

At approximately 9:24 a.m. on Friday, April 19, a University of Maine graduate student was struck by a university vehicle on Long Road at the University of Maine campus in Orono. The student reports that they are at a local hospital with minor injuries.

Emergency services, including the Orono Fire Department, University Volunteer Ambulance Corps, University of Maine Police Department, Orono Police Department and Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene.

The university vehicle involved in the incident was a Chevrolet Express van. It was being operated by a university employee.

Counseling services and support are available for students, faculty or staff who may have been affected. The Counseling Center can be reached at 207-581-1392 and the Dean of Students Office can be reached at 207-581-1406.

The scene has been cleared and Long Road is now accessible. An investigation is being conducted by the University of Maine Police Department with assistance from the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office Crash Reconstruction Unit. Paid work experience in high school is a strong predictor of positive adult employment outcomes for individuals with developmental disabilities. Beginning in late June 2015, the Summer Work for ME project will provide Bangor area high school students with developmental disabilities with a range of paid work experiences to help them gain insight into their own strengths and interests and cultivate career awareness. The project will leverage funding from the Maine Department of Labor, Bureau of Rehabilitation Services to provide job coaching for the students at the work sites through Vocational Rehabilitation program situational assessment dollars. Transition counselors from Vocational Rehabilitation will examine how the melding of work sites into situational assessments for several students yields them the information needed for assessing clients. Community Rehabilitation Provider KFI will take the lead on the development of the work sites at Eastern Maine Community College and the hiring and training of job coaches. Students will work four (4) hours per day, four (4) days each week (M-Th) and attend a three (3) hour job skills training workshop provided by project staff and a teacher from the students’ school. Evidence-based practices for increasing student levels of self-determination will be incorporated into each of the project components.
