Disability: Part of the Equity Equation
Observed annually in October, National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) celebrates the contributions of America’s workers with disabilities past and present and showcases supportive, inclusive employment policies and practices. In recognition of the important role people with disabilities play in a diverse and inclusive American workforce, the theme for NDEAM 2022 is “Disability: Part of the Equity Equation.”
The U.S. Department of Labor Office of Disability Employment Policy notes that NDEAM activities aren’t “over in October” and offers a resource, Year-Round Employer Strategies for Advancing Disability Inclusion: ten ideas for organizations to promote a disability-friendly workplace.
In his Presidential Proclamation, President Joseph R. Biden, Jr. stated, “This month, let us acknowledge workers with disabilities who make our communities, our economy, and our Nation stronger. Let us continue the legacy of generations of disability rights activists who have fought for equal employment opportunities, integrated workplaces, and equal pay for equal work. Let us deliver the promise of America to all Americans.
